Discussion at The Portal to focus on locally grown food

The topic of food and the community will be on the table next week as The Portal welcomes a bestselling author and a local farmer.

The topic of food and the community will be on the table next week as The Portal welcomes a bestselling author and a local farmer.

Vicki Robin, author of Your Money or Your Life, will be at The Portal in Ladner on Monday to talk about her new book, Blessing the Hands That Feed Us: What eating closer to home can teach us about food, community, and our place on earth.

The book chronicles Robin's efforts to eat food produced within 10 miles (less than 20 kilometres) of her home in September 2010.

It also looks at relocalization, transition and the global crises, eating in the context of community and profiles of farmers and community becoming stronger through food and feeding one another.

Local farmer Lydia Ryall, who owns Cropthorne Farms on Westham Island, a fourhectare (10-acre) certified organic mixed vegetable and pasture-based poultry operation, will also be speaking at the event.

Ryall, 29, was recently named the 2014 B.C. and Yukon Outstanding Young Farmer.

Monday's talk runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at The Portal, 4755-51st Ave.

Admission is by donation.
