Earthwise screening film that details impacts of declining bee populations

The Earthwise Society is inviting members of the public to attend a screening of Vanishing of the Bees at Earthwise Farm and Garden next week.

Set to screen on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m., the documentary details the disastrous effects the disappearance of the bees would have on your diet and what you can do to help prevent that from happening.

Many bee species are endangered and vanishing. Without pollinators, such as bees, we will lose onethird of the food in our diet, according to the Earthwise Society.

Agricultural systems would be hard hit because without bees, crops such as blueberries and cranberries cannot produce fruit. In addition, many plants that produce gourds, such as melons and squashes, are also dependent on bees for propagation, making bees a keystone species.

At the same time, how we choose to live on earth and interact with all of its inhabitants, both plants and animals, affects bees.

In response to this serious situation, the Earthwise Society and the Delta Chamber of Commerce have instituted the Feed the Bees program, which encourages individuals to include plants in their gardens that ensure the health of bee populations.

Feed the Bees will host a series of bee-friendly events and educational opportunities such as this screening of Vanishing of the Bees. It will be followed by Earthwise Society's Bee Friendly Market and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 12.

Seating is limited at the screening of Vanishing of the Bees. Tickets are $5 in advance or $10 at the door.
