Visitors to Boundary Bay Regional Park can now experience "food with a view" at the new Centennial Beach Café.

The café, which opened for business last week, features indoor seating for 16 and outdoor seating for 40.

"The concession is a great addition to the amenities available to visitors to Boundary Bay Regional Park," says Heather Deal, chair of Metro Vancouver's Environment and Parks Committee. "We're happy to have a partner who shows how simple it can be to integrate sustainability into regular business practices."

The café is part of the recently unveiled facility at Centennial Beach that is a showcase of sustainable technology. The building's features include a green roof, solar hot water and special glass to prevent bird strikes.

Situated to take maximum advantage of the views and to best fit into the natural surroundings, the building uses natural light and ocean breezes.

Motion sensors reduce the running time of lights and low-volume and high-efficiency fixtures and appliances reduce energy costs. Native plants and trees will provide shade and habitat.

The Centennial Beach Café's commitment to sustainability continues to its food containers and cutlery, which are made of biodegradable materials. Food waste will be composted and cooking oil will be recycled.

The café will be operated by Paul Roberts, a Tsawwassen resident with 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry.

"We wanted to offer really quality fresh food," notes Roberts. "With the building being so green and modern, it warranted a modern, healthy twist to traditional beach fare."

Items such as fish and chips will be on the menu as well as a range of healthy, reasonably-priced options, including a kids' menu, salads, wraps, sushi, noodle boxes and more. Roberts and executive chef David Knight developed the menu.

A full espresso bar and a range of baked goods are also available.
