It was a deadly night on Metro Vancouver roads Thursday evening.
Delta police and RCMP in Surrey and Burnaby are investigating three fatal motor vehicle crashes that claimed the lives of three people.
In Delta, DPD along with Delta firefighters responded to the scene just after 6 p.m.
“A Ford F-150 had collided with the median divider at the Highway 17A exit (northbound from Highway 17 eastbound),” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove the driver from the vehicle, but despite their efforts, the driver did die at the scene.”
Leykauf said officers are still notifying next of kin, but can say the deceased is a 50-year-old Delta man.
She said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The accident closed the highway to traffic in both directions leading to significant congestion in the area, particularly along Deltaport Way.
“While we recognize that the road closures caused significant delays for drivers in the area, and absolutely we want to thank the drivers for their patience and understanding,” she said. “Our officers needed to fully document the scene and also there was a need to protect the privacy and the dignity of the deceased.”
The highway was re-opened fully to traffic around 10 p.m.
In Burnaby, RCMP are investigating a crash that trapped three people inside a truck on Lougheed Highway just east of Lake City Way around 1 a.m.
The driver died at the scene, while the two others in the vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Surrey RCMP are also investigating after a man in his 50s was struck and killed by two vehicles on Highway 10 near 152 St.
RCMP are also on the scene Friday morning of another serious crash in Surrey at Highway 17 and Old Yale Road. There is no word yet on any injuries in this incident.
