People out for a pleasant walk this fall shouldn’t be surprised if they hear some shotgun blasts.

That’s because hunting season begins Sept. 2, and continues to Jan. 19 for most species, although it’s extended to March 10 for others.

According to the city’s website, hunters must have all permits and licences required under the Migratory Birds Convention Act and BC Wildlife Act, which requires mandatory training, qualifications, and insurance coverage. For hunting on private lands, hunters must first have landowners’ permission.

Hunting is not allowed on Sundays and is only allowed a half hour before sunrise and a half hour after sunset.

Hunting is allowed in Boundary Bay, on the seaward side of the dike only, east of 64th Street. Hunting is only permitted 150 metres from the dike and firearms cannot be discharged towards land within 180 m of the dike.

A map which shows where hunting is allowed is included in the Discharge of Firearms Regulation Bylaw No. 2155.
