Delta council recently agreed to award a contract valued at over $1.5 million for a series of mobility upgrades at crosswalks and traffic signal improvements.
The work is to take place at the following locations:
80 Avenue at 115 Street
47A Avenue at 488 Street
Central Avenue at Lions Park
Arthur Drive North of 47 Avenue
Arthur Drive at 45 Avenue
The Boundary Bay Road at Park Entrance
116 Street at 91 Avenue
112 Street at the 7400 block
83 Avenue at 116 Street
The new control light to be added at Central Avenue at Lions Park is the result of a community petition last fall by six-year-old Ladner resident Arianne Dielman.
The upgrades will have a price tag of almost $2 million once all other costs are included.
Meanwhile, the city is also undertaking a Vision Zero Study and has issued a contract tender for a consultant to help put together a strategy aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries in Delta.
Vision Zero is a multi-national road traffic safety project.
The project originated in Sweden and is gaining momentum in North America, according to an earlier Delta staff report, noting it has been embraced at the federal levels in both Canada and the United States.
One of the key differences between Vision Zero and traditional approaches to road safety is that traffic collisions are considered preventable, viewing safety as a shared responsibility between system designers, policy makers and road users through system level changes.
