Delta police and other police forces are joining in on the RCMP’s annual blitz called Light up the Province on Dec. 7, targeting impaired driving.

Last year, the combined forces in Light up the Province set up a total of 228 check stops across B.C. and checked more than 54,000 motorists for booze behind the wheel and stopped 222 drivers who were impaired by drugs or booze.

DPD Const. Courtney Horne points out on social media that she helped remove more than 50 impaired drivers from Delta streets in the past year.

Impaired driving is one of the top causes of collisions, injury and fatalities, said Horne.

“Our message is simple, arrive alive and don’t drive impaired,” Horne said.

“If your festivities include drugs or alcohol, please plan your transportation carefully,” added Karon Trenaman, with ICBC.

“Arrange to have a designated driver, hail a taxi, call a rideshare or use public transit,” she said.

Penalties for impaired driving range from a 24-hour to a 90-day immediate driving prohibition, vehicle impound, monetary penalties, and charges under the Criminal Code, say RCMP.
