Junior Sun Devils champs again at Kamloops volleyball tourney

Fresh off its gold medal win over Abbotsford Christian at the Seaquam Tournament, the South Delta Sun Devils junior "A" squad headed to Kamloops to defend its title at the annual Thompson Rivers University Junior Volleyball Tournament.

The girls played two games Friday and, after winning both, advanced to the playoffs Saturday.

The "A" team then defeated three schools from the Kamloops area to advance to the the championship match against the Earl Marriott Mariners. The South Surrey school proved to be a formidable opponent as the sides battled point for point in the opening game. With the score tied at 15-15, the Sun Devils gained control and went on to a 25-21 win. South Delta then produced a 25-14 triumph in the second game to clinch the title.

Excellent team work, strong serving, solid defence and an unstoppable offence provided the winning formula.

The SDSS program's junior "B" team also competed in Kamloops and more than held its own despite a challenging draw, placing fourth.

Both local squads are looking forward to a strong second half of the season, with one team having the league title in their sights and the other striving for continued improvement.

The As will also be defending their title at their own invitational which wraps up on Saturday at South Delta secondary.

The "A" team includes: Courtney Bogress, Laura Findlay, Jessica Hasker, Christine Howlett, Anika Klassen, Sam Loiselle, Nicole and Megan McNamara, Zoe Mydansky, Cassidy Pearson, Lauren Shirley and Laura Watt.

The B squad features Leah Burns, Mieguen Butcher, Marta Cimoszko, Sarah Glennon, Mackenzie Gray, Kylie Holliday, Nicole Howlett, Emily Lawson, Sydney Lowe, Danny McCardell, Sabrina Poshen, and Maria Starko.

The girls are coached by Dan Burgess, Anne Howlett and Heather Loiselle.
