Former Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Kim Baird has been recognized for her advocacy for Indigenous peoples and work in reconciliation with the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
On Tuesday (Aug. 27), Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, awarded Kwuntiltunaat, Kim Baird and 53 others for their various contributions to society in a ceremony at HMCS Discovery in Vancouver.
The Coronation Medal is a Canadian honour created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
The honour was launched by Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and recognizes those who have made significant contributions to Canada and their home province.
The medal will be awarded to thousands of individuals across the country and is the first Canadian honour to mark a coronation.
It was noted that Baird, currently serving as Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Chancellor, has a life’s work providing a foundation to create opportunities for the process of reconciliation to exist and thrive, including acknowledging that First Nations have a right to self-determination, a quality of life equal to all, and in partnership with all people.
The ceremony at HMCS Discovery was the second of three celebrating the recipients of the Coronation Medal.
The first ceremony took place at Government House on July 18, 2024, where 60 recipients were recognized, and the third will take place in late 2024.
Former Delta police Chief Neil Dubord was among the first 60 people who were recognized.
“I am delighted to recognize another group of remarkable British Columbians with the King Charles III Coronation Medal,” said Austin in a news release. “While this medal marks a memorable and historic occasion, it also inspires us to celebrate those who have made positive impacts on communities throughout the province. These opportunities are a deeply meaningful part of my role as lieutenant governor, and I was honoured to put forward the names of these incredible individuals.”
A list of recipients was also announced on Tuesday by the premier’s office, and they were awarded a medal from the premier.
This week’s event was done jointly but the medal allotments were distinct.
