Major upgrades coming for Delta road

The city is currently upgrading a sanitary main on the avenue

The City of Delta is planning more upgrades for a lengthy stretch of local road.

A request for proposals was issued for a detailed design of roadway, protected bike lanes, sidewalk and infrastructure upgrades along the south side of 96th Avenue, between 114th and 120th streets in North Delta.

The city notes that road improvements are required to provide curbs and gutters on the south side along with improving active transportation facilities along the corridor.

The preliminary design is to be completed later this summer, with construction to take place in the spring and summer of 2025, subject to approved funding.

The city notes that 96th Avenue is part of the Neighbourhood Road Improvement Plan, which is to improve accessibility and mobility around Delta for vehicles, transit, pedestrians, cyclists and others. The initiative addresses aging roads, lack of sidewalks and lack of cycling connectivity in a number of areas.

With the planned R6 Scott Road RapidBus, the city also wants to improve walking and cycling connections to transit.

The City of Surrey has completed a detailed design for the north side of the road. The design on the Delta side will need to be coordinated and in alignment with Surrey.

The roadway has undergone much work over the last couple of years.

Two years ago, Metro Vancouver undertook construction of a new 1.8 metre (six foot) diameter transmission watermain on 96th Avenue between 117B Street and the Southern Rail corridor.

Part of a broader regional upgrade project, the road was closed for more than six months.

A traffic management plan and emergency response provisions were developed through consultations between Delta, Surrey and the regional district.

Last year, council approved a contract of more than $1.9 million for a city sanitary sewer upgrade project.

Currently ongoing, that project includes installation of a large new sanitary sewer main along the avenue from 116th Street to east of the BC Hydro right-of-way/Southern Railway crossing.

Staff last year noted the Metro Vancouver project was simply too big to accommodate two contractors in the same area at the same time doing different projects.

The road improvement and beatification project planned for the roadway is to follow the sewer upgrade.
