Delta council last week approved the latest recommended funding for the annual Adult School Crossing Guard Program.

The city will pay $126,470 to the Delta School District to support the 2024/25 program.

A total of 31 locations for crosswalk crossing guards had been identified for the school year, an increase of two locations from the previous year’s program.

The new crossing guard locations are for Gibson Elementary at the intersection of 92nd Avenue and 116th Street and Brooke Elementary at the intersection of Brook and Dunlop roads.

The city has been funding the program since 1999.

A report to council notes that the program also aligns with the Vision Zero strategy by enhancing pedestrian safety and reducing traffic conflicts around schools.

To streamline the annual approval process, it was also recommended that the city’s general manager of engineering be provided the delegated authority to approve the program in future years, which means the funding request would not go to council for final approval.
