The City of Delta has issued a request for bids for a qualified contractor to undertake physical upgrades to existing hard and soft landscaped areas at the Boundary Bay Cemetery in Tsawwassen

The upgrades will take place in a small section of the cemetery and includes supporting infrastructure for three new columbaria, according to the city.

A new concrete pad, blocks, plantings and irrigation are to be included in the upgrade.

The city will provide and deliver the columbaria, which is scheduled to arrive this June.

Ten years ago, council approved a $1 million contract to upgrade both the Boundary Bay Cemetery and the North Delta Cemetery, a project that was the result of a public consultation process that began two years prior.

That project was aimed at modernizing and beautifying the cemeteries as well as a way to increase interment capacity.

At the time, the four-hectare (9.8-acre) Boundary Bay Cemetery’s in-ground interment spaces were almost full, but the upgrades would increase space as well as create other interment options.

Both municipal cemeteries are managed by Delta staff, and on-site interments are coordinated by appointment with the city.

Interment services are purchased at time of need only and by appointment.
