An enclosed off-leash dog area is coming to a local park.
The City of Delta recently wrapped up a request for bids for an experienced and qualified contractor to construct an enclosure at Paterson Park in Ladner, which is to include new fencing, surfacing, drainage installation and a grass planting.
It will be located beside the current parking lot on Clarence Taylor Crescent.
A city report notes funding of $150,000 is available for the enclosure through the 2022 Delta Capital Plan.
Once the contract has been awarded, the city is hoping to have the project completed by mid-October.
A city report notes that the enclosure does not alter the existing boundaries of the designated dog off-leash area in the park, but simply provides an enclosed portion of the off-leash area should dog owners wish to have their dogs in a safe, fenced space.
The priority items will be the perimeter fencing and double-gate access points, identified in an earlier conceptual plan, along with a seating area for dog owners and improved drainage.
As the introduction of the enclosure will create a new form of park usage, staff will monitor the usage of the enclosure upon completion of the project to evaluate success, the report notes.
Should the need arise for an expansion of the enclosure at Paterson Park, staff will report back to council.
