Penalty parade not slowing down undefeated Ice Hawks

They are the big bad and unbeaten Delta Ice Hawks through the first week of regular season action in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League.

They are the big bad and unbeaten Delta Ice Hawks through the first week of regular season action in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League.

The Ice Hawks have overcome a parade of penalties to put together a 2-0-1 record that includes a 5-1 win over the Abbotsford Pilots on Tuesday at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The visitors failed to capitalize on whopping 13 power play chances despite outshooting Delta 38-26 on the night. Veteran Alex Anhert turned in outstanding performance in net for the second straight home game.

Thanks to his work and some excellent penalty killing, the Hawks have surrendered just one power play goal in their own rink on 19 chances.

Anhert received more than enough offensive help on goals from Nolan Wallinger, Marc Letourneau, Spencer Schoen, Michael Olson-Eyre and Mark Trotman.

Three nights earlier, the Hawks blanked the North Delta Devils on five power play opportunities en route to a dominating 6-1 victory at Sungod Arena.

The team continues to receive balanced scoring with six different players finding the net - Tanner Gattinger, Brandon Gaunt, Evan Grannary, Wallinger, Latourneau and call-up Brett Gelz.

Scott Lapp made the most of his first start of the season in net, making 27 saves.

The Ice Hawks travel to Port Moody on Saturday night then return home Tuesday to host North Delta 7:30 p.m.
