U8 Oilers and U11 Storm raise over $2,000 for KinVillage's New Day Program for Older Adults

For about an hour’s worth of fun on and off the ice, South Delta Minor Hockey Association (SDMHA) players have raised more than $2,000 to enhance seniors’ lifestyle in the community.

The U8 Oilers and U11 A1 Storm got together for a skills contest and scrimmage last Sunday (Feb. 26) at the Ladner Leisure Centre to raise funds for KinVillage’s New Day Program for Older Adults (DPOA). The donation will go towards the purchase of such items as furniture, fitness equipment, an open chef’s kitchen, music therapy and games.

Delta’s first responders were on hand to welcome both teams and their supporters while Vancouver Giants’ mascot “Jack the Giant” also joined in on the fun.

“The kids had a good time and the people from KinVillage are happy. I think we accomplished the goal of not only raising funds, but raising some awareness of our seniors in the community,” said Rick Albus, one of the game’s organizers.“It’s one of those things where we have asked a lot from them over the last three years (during the pandemic), so it’s nice to give something back for their efforts.”

Albus hinted the game could become an annual event with perhaps some different SDMHA participating.
