Approximately 20 contractors descended on KinVillage Community Centre last Friday and left a beautiful water feature in their wake.
The contractors were there to take a course, Build a Pond in a Day, and did just that for the benefit of the Tsawwassen centre.
"We had planned on the waterfall at one side of the entrance but we decided to balance up the appearance with a gurgler on the other side," said Steve Kovacs, owner of Ladner's Waterscene Designs and co-ordinator of the event. "There are so many activities in this centre and this water feature will provide a welcome to everyone from the community."
John Lusted, director of recreation at the centre, said the waterfall scene at the front entrance is a "beautiful feature" that will be followed up by landscaping with the help of horticulturalist Kathy Van Vliet from Sunnyside Nurseries and the Lions Club.
"We were able to do this project with funds raised by the book sale in January, which covered the cost of materials," Lusted said.
"The labour was taken care of by the contractors attending the course."
"We can do this project in a day because of all the participants who participated in the work," said Kovacs, who along with Charles Arnot, Jennifer MacKinnon and Paul Becksma instructed the course.
"Building a beautiful water feature takes skill and knowledge," said Kovacs.
"You have to think about where you are going to put the rocks, where they will look best," added Arnot.
"That's where the artistry comes in," said Neil Simpson, one of the participants.
Lusted said it is hoped the calm sound of water rippling and the beauty of the lights at night will be enjoyed by residents at the care home and assisted living, visitors from the community and the many program participants.
