A proposal to shift a liquor licence to a nearby golf clubhouse has caused a stir in a Ladner neighbourhood.
The Links at Hampton Cove (formerly Cove Links) on Admiral Boulevard wants to transfer the primary liquor licence from the now-closed Rusty Anchor Pub on Ferry Road to its clubhouse lounge.
The transfer request will require Delta council’s blessing before it can be sent to the province’s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch where approval is also required. A licence transfer wouldn’t require a public hearing by Delta.
Despite the applicant receiving several letters of support as well as a petition in favour, letters have also poured in expressing opposition.
Several residents say the pub was far enough away from houses that noise was not a bother, whereas the clubhouse is located in a residential area and shares a fence with many homes. With a pub comes noise, including people coming and going and smoking in the parking lot, they complained.
Another complained the area already has a parking problem.
“As lifelong Ladner residents, concerned parents and voting members of this community, we implore you to deny this application and keep our neighbourhood a quiet, enjoyable place to live,” wrote one nearby homeowner.
The Neilson Grove Elementary PAC also expressed opposition, noting the school’s proximity to the golf course.
The applicant has reduced the requested hours of operation to 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
Council was told a new development is planned for the pub site, one that may or may not include a future liquor licence application.
