Remembering through music

The KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen will be the site of a Concert Of Remembrance next weekend. On Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.

The KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen will be the site of a Concert Of Remembrance next weekend.

On Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m., the Delta Music Makers community band will be providing music appropriate to the theme of remembrance, supplemented by piper Jamie Thomson, vocalists Margaret Behenna and Alan Dodds, and storyteller Brian Ellis.

The 828 Hurricane Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets will provide the colour guard for the marching in and presenting of the colours, and will stand at attention during O Canada. Piper Jamie Thomson will join the band near the end of the concert to perform Sands Of Kuwait and Amazing Grace in an arrangement with the Delta Music Makers.

"We always hold this nostalgic and respectful concert on the Sunday before Remembrance Day, and this year it happens to be a full week prior," explains Curt Jantzen, leader of the Delta Music Makers. "The whole purpose of this concert, of our music and presentations, is to honour our Canadian military, past and present, but the audience should be prepared for some laughs and light-hearted music as well as the solemn and the nostalgic. During the afternoon you will be moved from tears to laughter and back again."

KinVillage is hosting the event for the third year, and will provide free refreshments at intermission. Admission is by donation. These donations are put towards not only related performance costs, but also towards a monetary student award given annually by the Delta Music Makers.

The Delta Music Makers and the KinVillage provide this Concert of Remembrance for the benefit of the community, and to honour Delta's veterans. Anyone arriving in uniform will be given a seat of honour and all veterans will be recognized by the MC.

"This is an opportunity for Delta residents to thank their neighbours and friends who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces," says Jantzen, "while enjoying a wonderful afternoon of entertainment. The music will consist of lively concert marches, solo features, vocal selections highlighting our two vocalists, as well as pieces specific to the army, navy and air force."
