Children will get a chance to train like astronauts during upcoming day camps being offered by Delta Gymnastics and Digivations.
The unique camps, for children six to 14, incorporate science, technology, engineering and math principles with gymnastics training.
Camps will run Aug. 7 to 10 and Aug. 20 to 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
In the morning, using LEGO, rockets, roller coasters and other science kits, students take imaginary missions to space to explore for new life forms and resources on Mars and elsewhere in honour of the Mars Science Laboratory and the anticipated landing of the Mars Rover Curiosity.
Students integrate gymnastics exercises while learning about kinesthetics and aerodynamic forces such as thrust, lift, drag and weight.
In the afternoon, coaches at Delta Gymnastics reinforce the knowledge while youngsters work on different apparatus. This all culminates in the construction and launches of different forms of rockets followed by a focus on the thrust and propulsion required to achieve their own maximum performance in the gym.
During the first week of camp last month, students also discussed the qualities required by astronauts, scientists, explorers and athletes, including intellectual and physical agility, bravery, curiosity and risk D taking while they l learned about different G astronauts, such c as Sally Ride and g Neil Armstrong, and g historical explorers such as Magellan and Captain Vancouver.
