The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
*Aug. 17, 9:14 p.m., 200 block 54th St: Complainant reported a group of 40 to 50 teenagers in a nearby park. Police dispersed the crowd, advising all parties to go home per Delta parks bylaw after dusk.
*Aug. 19, 4:46 a.m., 5500 block 16th Ave: Complainant reported that a female was refusing to pay her bus fare or exit the vehicle. Upon police attendance, the driver assisted the female by accepting the money she had to get her home safely. The female had been drinking, but was able to care for herself and refused to accept any further assistance from police.
*Aug. 20, 8:12 a.m., Ferry Causeway: Complainant reported a male swearing at staff for not allowing him onto the ferry due to it being sold out. The male refused to move his vehicle from the ticket booth. Police arrived and advised the male to make an on-line reservation in the future to avoid similar situations. Further, due to his behaviour toward staff, the male was refused service that day by the onsite manager.
Ladner
*Aug. 16, 11:41 a.m., 5000 block Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant requested police remove a male from their restaurant who is known to have filmed staff in the past. Police spoke with the male who stated that he was a filmmaker, however, per the complainant, police advised the male that he was no longer welcome at the restaurant and was warned about trespassing if further complaints are received.
*Aug. 16, 6:02 p.m., 5000 block River Road: Complainant reported a boat cruising the waterway at a high rate of speed, causing an excessive wake. Police spoke to the operator who admitted to speeding in error and was apologetic. The operator was subsequently re-educated on wake damage and speed rules in the channel.
*Aug. 18, 1:43 p.m., 5000 block 49A Ave: Complainant reported two males drinking near the baseball backstop at a nearby park. Police spoke to the males who were under the impression that public drinking had been opened up to all city parks. The males were advised that public drinking was limited to certain parks, of which this park was not, and a comprehensive list is available online. Both parties agreed to leave the park without incident.
*Aug. 18, 7:09 p.m., 5000 block 44th Ave: Complainant reported a group of teenagers hanging out behind a nearby park where, days prior, a church was subject to graffiti, urine and vomit after teens were observed on the grounds. Police attended and observed the group behind the church with glass bongs. Police advised the group that the church had been subject to recent property damage and that they were not authorized to be on the property. The teens denied knowledge of the previous incident and left the area.
*Aug. 21, 2:38 a.m., 3600 block Highway 17: Police were conducting proactive patrols when a vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. Police conducted a traffic stop after logging a speed of more than 50 km/h over the limit, and the driver was issued a ticket for excessive speed as well as a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
