The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
*March 3, 11:17 p.m., 1300 block 56th Street: A store employee contacted police to report that an unidentified male came into the store and used foul language towards a staff member. The male departed the store through the entrance only door, causing the door to come off of the track. Police viewed the video footage in store and noted that there was no intent to damage the door or knock it off the track. On behalf of the staff, police advised the male that he was no longer welcome at the store due to his belligerent behaviour.
*March 6, 4:17 p.m., location withheld: Complainant reported that two youths were jumping off of a roof and onto a trampoline and was worried they were going to get hurt. Police attended the residence and spoke with an 11-year-old, who stated that she and her friend were home and they were jumping off the roof and onto the trampoline earlier in the day. Police observed that the roof was approximately four feet above the trampoline. The youth advised that no one was hurt and she was not going to continue doing it. Police phoned the youth’s father and advised him of the situation. The father advised that he was thankful for police attendance.
*March 6, 8:55 p.m., 5500 block 1st Avenue: Police received complaints of youths gathering in a nearby park. Police attended and the youths dispersed, while yelling profanities and continuing to create noise. Police stopped a cyclist after he attempted to flee. The cyclist was issued a violation ticket for “ride cycle after dark without lights” and “cycle without required bicycle helmet.”
Ladner
*March 4, 9:37 a.m., 4800 block Delta Street: Complainant called police to report a belligerent male at her storefront. The male had already left the business when police arrived. Police spoke with an employee, who stated that the male’s behaviour had made her uncomfortable, as he was angry about high costs. There was no criminal offence, but the employee requested police speak with the male and advise him that he is refused service at their business locations. Police spoke with the male, who understood his behaviour was inappropriate and accepted he was no longer welcome at the business.
*March 5, 1:58 a.m., 5400 Ladner Trunk Road: An officer observed a vehicle make a turn contrary to posted signage. The officer attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the driver did not pull over, and instead continued and turned into a nearby parking lot. The driver fled on foot, and was arrested without incident after a short foot pursuit. The driver performed poorly on a Field Sobriety Test. His vehicle was impounded and the driver was taken back to the police station for a further testing by a Drug Recognition expert. The investigation is continuing.
*March 6, 7:55 p.m., 4800 block Delta Street: Police did a computer search of a vehicle, which showed that it had inactive insurance since Sept. 6, 2020. Police initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver. The vehicle was towed to the owner’s residence and the driver was issued a violation ticket for “drive without insurance.”
*March 6, 7:58 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17a: A BMW vehicle OnStar reported a motor vehicle incident. Police arrived on scene and spoke to the driver, who explained that there was no crash, but that he had lost his key fob in Tsawwassen. The car had shut down without the key fob in the car after he had been driving for five minutes. Police attended the scene and went back to the last known location of the keys. Police dug through a trash can and located the keys in a discarded McDonald’s bag. Police returned the keys to the driver, who was very appreciative.
*March 7, 1:08 p.m., 5000 Bridge Street: An employee at a nearby business reported that a male and female were sitting on the front steps and blocking the front door of their business. Police attended and located the male standing near the front of the business with a female. The male advised that he was using the stairwell of the building to stay dry as well as use the business Wi-Fi. Police advised the male of the complaint who moved on with the female without issue. The complainant was advised to phone police if further issues arise.
