South Delta Crime Beat: Delta resident scammed more than $8,000 on religious dating website

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

*Sept. 21, 10:17 a.m., location withheld: Complainant contacted police to advise they had been the victim of an online fraud for the past nine months. The victim had sent a total of $8,700 to a person they had met on a religious dating website. The funds were sent through wire transfer, gift cards and e-transfers. *Sept. 24, 12:59 a.m., 900 block of 56th St.: Police conducted a traffic stop to serve a prohibited driving notice on a driver for the term of three months. The driver’s license was seized, however police issued a temporary license to allow the driver to drive home.

*Sept. 25, 8:33 p.m., 4900 Block Canoe Pass Way: Complainant called to report several males fighting near a restaurant. Police attended and spoke to several individuals who advised multiple groups of males were being belligerent toward one another. Eventually, matters escalated and a physical altercation ensued. Investigation determined the incident was a consensual fight.

Ladner

*Sept. 22, 7:40 p.m., 6200 Block of Highway 99: A driver reported seeing a body on the shoulder of the Highway 99 off-ramp. Police attended and observed a grey plastic tarp blocking the merging lane onto Highway 99 from 17A. No human body or signs of anything suspicious in the area. Tarp moved off highway to eliminate distraction and hazard for drivers.

*Sept. 25, 1:30 p.m., 5900 Block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police set-up a roadblock at Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A and stopped a driver with glossy eyes, slurred speech and an odour of liquor on their breath as they spoke. Two breath samples were taken through an ASD, both resulting in “fail” readings. Police issued the driver an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and impounded their vehicle.

*Sept. 25, 8:59 a.m., 7400 Block of Progress Way: A business owner reported an unknown male inside a fully fenced area at his business via a live feed CCTV. Police set up containment on the location and K9 units attended to assist with tracking. Police observed a gate, which had been pried open, and the K9 unit track lead to the male, who was arrested for break and enter without incident.

*Sept. 25, 10:48 a.m., 3600 Block of Highway 17: Police stopped a vehicle travelling 59 km/h over the posted speed limit. Police subsequently issued the driver a $368 violation ticket, and impounded their vehicle for seven days. The driver was picked up on the side of the road by a friend.

*Sept. 25, 9:38 p.m., 4600 Block of Hemlock Way: A resident interrupted a theft in progress and called police after an unknown male climbed into his vehicle’s open sunroof and was riffling through the glove box. Police attended, but the owner of the vehicle didn't see what direction the male ran off to. Nothing was taken from the vehicle, and no damage was reported.
