The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
November 10th, 12:37 p.m., 4900 block Canoe Pass Way: Police attended a motor vehicle incident that involved a vehicle in a mall parking lot. While waiting for a tow truck, the driver stated that he needed to get an item from the car before it was towed and retrieved a non-lethal weapon from the driver’s seat area. When the driver was asked about the non-lethal weapon, the driver stated that it was for protection. The driver was fully cooperative and understanding when police advised that the non-lethal weapon would be seized.
November 12th, 2:08 p.m., 5700 block 12th Ave: Police observed a male leave a liquor establishment and enter the driver’s seat of his vehicle. Police then conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety and detected a distinct odour of liquor. An Approved Screening Device demand was read and the male was issued a 24 hour driving prohibition. The male surrendered his interim drivers’ license and chose to walk home.
November 13th, 4:40 p.m., 55a St: Complainant reported that she witnessed a vehicle hit another vehicle that was unoccupied and parked and subsequently fled the scene. Police met the complainant at the scene and observed the vehicle to have significant damage. Police made contact with the driver who admitted to colliding with the vehicle and leaving the scene. There were no injuries and the driver was issued a ticket.
November 15th, 2:25 a.m., 11700 block Walalee Dr: Complainant reported hearing two loud bangs outside his residence and requested police conduct a walk around of the exterior of his property. Police attended, conducted a walk around, and confirmed no broken windows or anything suspicious. It was a windy night and the noise could have been caused by his yard tools swinging around. The complainant was thankful for police attendance.
Ladner
November 9th, 9:51 p.m., Grove Ave 55b St: Complainant reported an unknown male who had appeared to be heavily intoxicated and unable to stand. Police attended and found the male who had a large cut above his left eye which appeared to be caused by a fall. The male advised he had been drinking for several hours and had a suitcase with him, as he was between places to stay. The male was then transported to the hospital to have his injuries cared for.
November 13th, 8:33 a.m., 3400 Block of Hwy 17a: Two males were located by police in a field and were observed discharging shotguns and hunting migratory game birds over decoys while in the field. The males had parked on the highway and had entered the property on foot. Police confirmed with the property owner that the males were not authorized to be on the property. The two males were served tickets under the Wildlife Act. Both males were warned for other licensing violations. Nine ducks were seized and transported to a bird rehabilitation facility.
November 13th, 11:49 a.m., Boundary Bay Dyke: Complainant reported seeing a male dressed in camouflage walking with a shotgun. Police attended and spoke to the male who was cooperative with police, possessed all the necessary hunting documents, and was following all hunting regulations.
November 14th, 5:32 p.m., Hwy 99 Hwy 17 off ramp: Complainant was driving and saw a vehicle pulled over to the shoulder with its hazard lights on. The complainant reported that he saw a hand waving out the window but was unable to stop in time. Police attended and located the vehicle which had run out of gas. The passenger had left to get a gas can and was on the way back to the vehicle. Police stood by to provide high visibility as it was a dark and rainy night. The passenger returned with fuel and the vehicle left without further incident.
November 15th, 12:43 p.m., 4100 block 104th St: Complainant reported hearing shots and saw two males in full camouflage gear with camouflage chairs and rifles. Police attended and patrolled on foot, observing lots of pedestrian traffic using the dyke. No one else heard any noise or saw the two males described. Police spoke to staff in the area, who heard shots earlier in the morning but nothing recently.
