The City of Delta has announced it is undertaking a school zone traffic calming project this month.

The engineering department undertook a review of all existing 30 km/h school zones in Delta and identified the areas where traffic calming could be improved.

Part of the city’s overall plan to develop a Vision Zero Strategy to reduce fatalities and serious collisions, traffic calming measures, including speed humps and raised crosswalks, will be installed at 17 elementary school sites.

The sites include:

Annieville Elementary (92A Ave & 112 St)

Beach Grove Elementary (17A Ave & Braid Rd)

Brooke Elementary (Delwood Dr)

Cliff Drive Elementary (12 Ave & Cliff Dr)

Cougar Canyon Elementary (Lyon Rd)

Devon Gardens Elementary (Russell Dr)

Gray Elementary (80 Ave)

Hawthorne Elementary (Central Ave)

Holly Elementary (62 St & Holly Park Dr)

Pebble Hill Elementary (2 Ave & 52A St)

Pinewood Elementary (Pinewood Dr)

Port Guichon Elementary (46A St)

South Park Elementary (Gilchrist Dr)

Sunshine Hills Elementary (Bond Blvd & Sunshine Dr)

Delta Christian Academy (53 St & Ladner Trunk Rd)

Ecole Du Bois-Joli (49 St & Weaver Dr)

Immaculate Conception School (88 Ave & 119 St)

Meanwhile, the city’s engineering department is currently exploring options for a new approach to implement neighbourhood traffic calming projects.

In a presentation to council last fall, Engineering Director Steven Lan said an approach should be based on neighbourhood engagement, rather than individual complaints.

Lan also noted current speed limits may not meet neighbourhod expectations, so a lower speed limit on residential streets may have to be considered.

Some areas already have reductions and there may be support for the speed limit of 50 km/h, even in areas that have already undergone traffic calming, to be reduced to 30 km/h in even more neighbourhoods, he said.

Community engagement is to take place on options for a new plan.
