Third recreation centre proposed for North Delta

North Delta is the largest and fastest growing of the city’s three communities, having more residents than Ladner and Tsawwassen combined

Currently, the only city recreation space south of 72nd Avenue in North Delta is a small gym with rooms at Pinewood Elementary School.

Could North Delta end up having a third recreation centre?

The rapidly growing community has the North Delta Recreation Centre as well as the Sungod Recreation Centre, but there is nothing north of 72nd Avenue other than space at Pinewood Elementary.

Coun. Dylan Kruger at the Nov. 18 council meeting, introduced a motion, to be discussed at the upcoming regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 2, asking for the city to analyze infrastructure, transportation and service needs in North Delta.

Aimed at “ensuring fairness in investment in North Delta,” one possibility that could come from that comprehensive review is planning work for a third recreation centre. The site in North Delta would still have to be determined.

Kruger said a number of community needs when it comes to recreation, transportation and infrastructure “require urgent attention” and that would include a feasibility study for another “new, modern” recreation facility, looking at potential sites, costs and budget strategies.

The idea of having another community centre, possibly south of 72nd Avenue in North Delta, was first brought up by Jeannie Kanakos when she was a member of Delta council.

After she retired from council, she reiterated to the Optimist in 2023 how the city needs to consider recreation, library and seniors services south of 72nd.

She said it is time to look at the 15-minute neighbourhood concept as a planning tool for North Delta as it makes sense for community connection and the environmental sustainability.

Any future community amenities from development should help fill the gap in the North Delta Community Plan, she added.
