Local indie band Tough Lovers presented a cheque for $5,519.35 to ALS Society of B.C. Tuesday.

The band, which includes Dane Stevens, Graham Madden, Jamie Smail and Ryan Stephenson, raised the money at a charity show last Friday at the Electric Owl Social Club in Vancouver.

Tough Lovers are competing in the Peak Performance Project 2012 Top 20 Artist Contest.

The top 20 artists are handpicked out of 500 submissions made by B.C. musicians, and are chosen by Music B.C., the Peak 102.7 and other judges from the local music business.

One of the challenges the band must complete was to conduct a fundraising campaign for the band's charity of choice.

Bassist Stevens and vocalist Smail have each lost an uncle to ALS so the ALS Society of B.C. was the obvious choice as a benefit charity.

ALS is a fatal progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed.
