Delta council has approved traffic calming measures for 117A Street in North Delta.

Delta council has approved traffic calming measures for 117A Street in North Delta.

Residents in the area requested traffic calming in September 2022 as the adjacent streets (117 and 118 Street) have speed humps.

Following discussions in October at the Transportation Technical Committee, speed reader boards were installed on 117A Street as a temporary measure to bring awareness to the issue.

But residents wanted to see more done, a submitted a petition in June requesting that permanent measures be put in place.

Staff reviewed the residents’ concerns with relation to speed and short-cutting vehicles on 117A Street and collected traffic survey data.

According to the staff report presented at the July 24th council meeting, the average traffic volume shows 310 vehicles per day with an average speed of 35 km.

“Although the data suggests that speeds on 117A Street are lower than the threshold required by our Traffic Calming Policy, calming measures are proposed for 117A Street to be consistent with the adjacent roadway in the area,” states the staff report. “Staff recommend installing three speed humps on 117A Street.”

The estimated cost of three permanent speed humps is $40,000. Funding will be allocated for the project from the 2023 capital plan.

The traffic calming measures will be on 117A Street between 77 Avenue and 79A Avenue adjacent to Gunderson Park.
