Truck inspections net 39 per cent out of service rate

Last week's three-day commercial vehicle inspection saw almost 40 per cent of the trucks inspected given an out of service rating.

Last week's three-day commercial vehicle inspection saw almost 40 per cent of the trucks inspected given an out of service rating.

The Delta police department's traffic section was joined by several other agencies April 17 to 19 for the sixth annual blitz.

Inspection teams were placed at seven locations around the community. Over the three days, more than 16,000 trucks were assessed. Of that, 692 were given further inspection and 268 (39 per cent) of those were deemed to be out of service.

"The inspectors used their expertise to focus on vehicles that were not likely to pass an inspection," said department spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan.

He said inspectors were looking at trucks' mechanical components, including brakes, tires, lights, steering and load security, as well as driver qualifications.

The inspectors also issued 513 tickets for various motor vehicle violations.

The out of service rate from this year's blitz was on par with 2011 (38 per cent) and a decrease from 2010 (42 per cent).

"One of the strategic goals of the Delta Police Department is to make Delta's roads the safest in B.C. and this initiative and partnership brought that goal one step closer," Feenan said.
