The Business Improvement Association (BIA) of Tsawwassen is planning a huge party at Diefenbaker Park this Saturday to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in a unique Tsawwassen way followed by an iconic royal movie under the stars.
The free event, sponsored by Vancity and a federal 2012 Diamond Jubilee Initiative grant, kicks off at 5 p.m. with a British celebration featuring local Celtic band Doghouse, Clarion Highland Dancers and juggler Matt Levy.
"We want everyone to get there early as the highlight of the afternoon will be at around 6 p.m. when our own Queen Mavis will be brought up to her throne in a full-on procession led by members of the Delta Police Pipe Band, the Girl Guides and a Tsawwassen Scott guard," says BIA executive director Ana Arciniega.
SDSS student Elizabeth Garland will then perform God Save the Queen and O Canada followed by a message from MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay.
The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club, community service group partner for the evening, will have a special British treats menu from 5 p.m. until quantities last featuring Jacket Potatoes (with all their trimmings), strawberry and blueberry scones, and British candy.
It will then be followed by the regular movie night concession menu plus there will also be food and beverages available by Stone Cold Creamery, McDonald's, Freshslice and the Tim Hortons Community Cruiser.
"Many groups and business will be present at the venue doing demos, games and many activities, including a community tug of war with audience participation," says Arciniega.
Vancity will be sharing a cake and cupcakes starting at 8 p.m. Other activities include making your own crown and three raffle baskets that contain Lion King licensed products courtesy of Disney.
Proceeds from popcorn and concession sales from all three movie nights will benefit one local group: The Rivers End Rangers, the senior branch of the Ladner/ Tsawwassen Girl Guides.
The movie will be shown at dusk (approximately 9: 30 p.m.) on a large inflatable screen. The movie featured this time is the iconic story about a young lion fulfilling his royal destiny.

The final movie night of the summer will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall.
