The City of Delta has received applications for two more cannabis retail outlets.
The rezoning applications would see a cannabis dispensary opened at the Delta Shoppers Mall at 8077 Scott Road as well as a dispensary in the Scottsdale Centre mall at 70 Avenue and Scott Road.
Earlier this year, Platinum Projects on behalf of Inspired Cannabis Co. applied to rezone a 2,740 square-foot commercial retail unit at the Delta Shoppers Mall.
That application was put on hold by Delta until the city finished dealing with an application by Seed & Stone to open a private cannabis dispensary at 616 Chester Road, located on Annacis Island.
Council recently gave the green light for the Annacis Island outlet.
More recently, the city received an application from the BC Liquor Distribution Branch for a 2,479-square-foot dispensary at Scottsdale Centre.
A report to council notes both applications are in the early stages of review and staff had not yet sent public notification letters to the surrounding areas.
Staff would work with Delta Police and the applicants to ensure that any security concerns are addressed prior to council's consideration of the applications.
The report also notes that although Delta does not have location criteria for cannabis dispensaries because the use is currently prohibited, consideration would need to be given to the locations relative to such sensitive uses as public parks, schools, child care facilities and other cannabis dispensaries.
Prior to the legalization of cannabis in Canada, Delta council passed a bylaw prohibiting cannabis production and retail sales in all zones, except where permitted by the province within the Agricultural Land Reserve.
The city will consider applications on a case-by-case basis, however.
