UPDATE: Transporation Minister Mike Stone has told reporters in Victoria that the government has no apetite to eliminate the Horseshoe bay to Nanaimo run.
BC Ferries is considering major service changes between the mainland and Vancouver Island that could see all Vancouver Island-bound traffic funneled through Tsawwassen.
The proposal is part of a major overhaul of BC Ferries mid-Island service, in an attempt to save billions in costs, including $200 million in upgrades that are needed at the Horseshoe Bay terminal.
No final decisions have been however public consultation is projected to start next year with a final decision by the end of 2015.
“It’s plausible to consider a scenario in the not-to-distant future whereby the vast majority of traffic from Nanaimo could potentially go through Tsawwassen,” Stone said in an interview with The Vancouver Sun on Tuesday. “But those decisions have not been made and (BC Ferries) is in the early stages of even looking at it.”
More to come.
