Traffic disruptions on 111 Street and around Sungod Recreation Centre are expected to be kept to a minimum during the parking lot project. Two-way traffic flow and access to properties is to also be maintained.

The City of Delta has issued a request for bids for a parking lot renewal project at the Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta.

The project is to take place in three phases over the next few years with the first phase this year.

Work will include repaving and new lighting in the southeast parking lot.

BC Hydro will be installing four electric vehicle charging stations at the same time as the paving work. Construction is to be completed by Aug. 31.

The city recently issued a news release that the parking lot is expected to be closed from June 24 until the end of August, however, parking will still be available in the large lot on the west side of the arena.

The city, in its request for bids, notes it will be hosting a large swim meet at the Sungod Recreation Centre on July 20 and 21, so the contractor must make every effort to ensure the site is safe for pedestrians and vehicles.

It’s all part of major upgrades for the recreation facility.

Other significant repairs taking place include upgrades to the roofing system of the aquatic centre, requiring its closure from Aug. 12 through Sept. 8.

That work coincides with the aquatic centre’s regularly scheduled annual maintenance shutdown, which includes the closure of the gymnasium, fitness centre and customer service office from Aug. 26 to 30.

As a result of the facility closure, aquatics programming, including swimming lessons and AquaFit classes, will be temporarily cancelled, the city notes.

However, other facilities including the North Delta outdoor pool, Ladner outdoor pool, Ladner Leisure Centre and Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre will expand their program capacity to accommodate the disruption to service.

The North Delta outdoor pool will also extend its schedule and remain open until Sept. 8.

The city earlier this year also issued a request for proposals for a consultant to conduct greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction pathways feasibility studies for Sungod and four other recreation facilities. The city notes that the project seeks to develop a long-term plan to achieve energy and GHG emission reductions.
