Construction on a major addition is going to get underway at Delta’s municipal hall.

The addition of an entrance vestibule is to enhance visual prominence of the building’s main entrance, and address long-standing operational challenges with maintaining climate control in the building’s lower lobby area, an update report to council notes.

A temporary building entrance has been incorporated into the overall project scope of work, enabling visitors to enter through an access structure directly north of the existing access doors.

The construction to develop the front entrance vestibule will take place between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31.

The hours for the public at city hall during construction will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while staff will continue to work their normal hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The project, is part of a series of planned upgrades to the facility totalling more than $2 million.

According to a previous civic report, a number of areas of the facility are in need of “critical maintenance and updating to ensure continued provision of services to the community.”

The initial estimated cost of the vestibule project alone was $1.2 million.

The city recently issued a request for bids for an experienced contractor to complete upgrades to 250-square-feet of indoor glass in the council chambers.

The glass is to be UV blocking, switchable and polymer dispersed liquid crystal with unlimited tint level.
