The Roberts Bank Lifeboat - Delta Marine Unit wants boaters to be safe while out on the water.
The local group conducts courtesy boat checks as part of its safety on the water program, notes media relations officer Chris Scurr.
"Our role is not to S give them tickets, but C help them be safe on the water and make sure they have the right equipment for their own personal safety as well as others," he says.
Scurr notes the pass rate for checks done by the unit is only about one in 12.
"Not many people are actually fully equipped," he says.
Common reminders include having enough lifejackets for everyone on board and a paddle in case of motor failure for personal watercraft.
The unit usually does checks at the Captain's Cove Marina dock.
The marine unit was also out providing safety boat services at the B.C. Summer Games rowing events at Deas Slough last month, Scurr notes.
The unit, which has a "very dedicated crew," trains twice a week (once in the classroom and once on the water).
"There's a lot of learning being done."
Scurr also notes the unit assists the local police and fire departments as well as Delta's engineering department.
