Social media was buzzing Tuesday morning as residents voiced concerns over a strong police presence at a home on 6th Ave. and Gilchrist in Tsawwassen.
The Optimist has learned that the police presence consisted of Vancouver Police and the RCMP Lower Mainland Emergency Response team.
VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin, in an emailed response to the Optimist, said she could not elaborate much as it is an ongoing VPD investigation.
“I understand that a large police presence like there was [Tuesday] can spark a lot of questions from members of the community. I can assure you that there was no risk to public safety,” said Visintin. “It is related to an ongoing VPD investigation, and as such, I cannot get into specific investigative avenues or tactics that were used.”
Those who posted on social media, claimed that there was a lockdown of nearby South Park Elementary, which was proven to be false by Delta School District officials.
Delta School District director of communications Cathryn Tucker provided the Optimist with a copy of a letter that was sent home to parents of South Park students.
“You may be aware that this morning, [Tuesday] there were emergency vehicles present in our community. They were in the neighbourhood on the behalf of the Vancouver Police Department,” reads the letter. “The Delta Police Department has relayed to us that this was an isolated situation. They were informed by the Vancouver Police that there was no concern for the safety of the community in regard to this matter.”
