For the second time in three weeks, winter conditions have resulted in the temporary closure of the Alex Fraser Bridge to all traffic.
Under normal conditions, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure uses a cable-collar system to remove snow that builds up on the bridge cables so traffic can safely pass. However, high winds can increase the shedding of snow and pose a risk to the rope technicians. This prevents them from deploying the system.
The ministry and its maintenance contractors closely monitor conditions when snow and cold temperatures are in the forecast.
There is no confirmed time on when the bridge will re-open. Northbound traffic is being re-routed to NorDel Way with Delta Police assisting with the closure.
Drive BC is suggesting to take alternate routes across the Fraser River, including the Massey Tunnel, Pattullo and Port Mann Bridges.
Winter conditions also closed the bridge during the morning rush hour on Dec. 24.
