The provincial transportation ministry heading into this weekend warned drivers to be prepared for winter driving conditions including having proper tires and ensuring their vehicles are equipped with a full tank of fuel.

It might be a good idea to stay off the roads as Delta residents awoke Sunday morning to the sight of blowing snow.

The City of Delta on social media this morning said crews are salting and plowing priority routes during the snowfall event.

The city this afternoon posted that all available trucks are working the roads.

"Please give yourself more time to get to where you need to go or stay home if you can," the city stated.

The provincial transportation ministry had the same advice heading into the weekend, saying if weather conditions worsen, drivers should stay off the road, and if they have to travel, ensure their vehicle is properly equipped with snow tires.

Delta residents on Facebook Sunday have been complaining about poor road conditions.

The city heading into the weekend said that since Monday, Dec. 12, snow and ice removal crews had been pre-treating first and second- priority routes with salt brine to help prevent black ice from forming.

First priority roads are public transit routes, major collectors, select school access roadways, and some roads in hilly areas. Pre-wetting, salting, sanding, and snowplowing are carried out as long as poor conditions exist.

First priority routes are maintained until conditions are under control. Only then are resources redirected onto lower priority routes. As soon as conditions deteriorate on these routes, resources are moved back to first priority routes.

According to Environment Canada's forecast for Metro Vancouver, as of Sunday at noon, we'll have snow during today, heavy at times, with a chance of flurries tonight.

We'll have a chance of flurries Monday during the day and periods of snow at night. Tuesday will see snow during the day and periods of snow at night.
