It was more than the regular lunchtime crowd taking in Champions League soccer on Tuesday at a Tsawwassen Pub.
Canadian national team members and 2020 Olympic gold medalists Sophie Schmidt and Allysha Chapman dropped by the Rose and Crown to take in the quarter-final match between Chelsea and Real Madrid.
The pair had just got off the ferry after helping Canada play to a 2-2 draw with Nigeria in Langford on Monday night to conclude an international friendly series to celebrate the team’s Olympic triumph in Tokyo last summer. They even brought in their gold medals to show the staff and customers.
Schmidt happens to be a big Chelsea fan. She watched her team win the game 3-2, but fall 5-4 in the two-game total aggregate that needed extra time.
Schmidt and Chapman are not only national team veterans, with a combined 300 international caps, but also teammates in the National Women’s Soccer League with the Houston Dash.
They helped Canada win Olympic bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio, while Schmidt was also member of the 2012 team in London that also captured bronze.
