There will be plenty of Delta flavour at next weekend’s Vanier Cup thanks to the Calgary Dinos advancing to the national final after a 30-17 win over McMaster.
Former South Delta Sun Devils standout and Canada West all-star linebacker Grant McDonald earned the Maury Van Vliet Award as defensive player-of-the-game thanks to his six solo tackles. He also showed his versatility with a two-yard touchdown reception midway through the final quarter.
Other SDSS alumni include linebackers Charlie Moore and Jacob Kirk. Grant’s older brother Jack — a fifth-fifth-year receiver — suffered a season-ending knee injury back in September at UBC but will accompany the team to Quebec City.
Meanwhile Seaquam graduates and twins Jalen and Tyson Philpot are a big part of Calgary’s offence. Jalen was named offensive player-of-the game thanks to seven receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown.
The Dinos will be looking for their first Vanier Cup win since 1995 when they take on the University of Montreal Carabins.
