Devils encounter frigid conditions at provincials

The South Delta secondary cross-country team wrapped up a successful season with an impressive showing at the provincial championships in Kelowna.

The event took place at the Telemark cross-country sky area on Crystal Mountain and runners had to compete in frigid conditions with the temperature sitting at -3C at race time.

For the first time ever, South Delta managed to qualify its boys and girls team for the championships.

The girls team finished 21st among 31 entries, led by the efforts of Peggy Noel who placed eighth overall, completing the demanding 4.8 kilometre trek in a time of 17 minutes and two seconds. The 280 participants featured five other Sun Devil participants, including Gillian Thiel who managed to crack the top 100 by finishing in 89th with a time of 19: 08. Rounding out the SDSS contingent were Megan Kwiatkowski (140th, 19: 54), Saskia Clauss (260th, 23: 09) and Angela Smith (265th, 23.35).

The boys team also placed 21st and was led by promising Grade 10 MacKenzie Connors finishing 85th out of 286 entries with a clocking of 26: 57. The boys race was 6.5 kilometres. Also performing well for the Sun Devils were Kevin Miller (129th, 27: 44), Harrison Wade (189th, 28: 48), Dawson Church (208th, 29: 11), Brent McNeil (239th, 29: 53) and Taylor Carkner (262nd, 31: 13).

Coaches arol Lingham, rooke Jacobs nd Lisa Crump re already looking forward to the 2012 season which will conclude with the provincials in Prince George.
