It has been a big volleyball season at Delta Secondary.
Three teams either won or placed high enough at the South Fraser Championships to earn berths at their respective provincial championships.
The junior boys, led by head coach Leanne Chow won the South Fraser title and won bronze at the provincials in Kelowna last weekend.
“The junior boys had an interesting season as they were a bit more competitive than a lot of the teams in Delta this year, so they filled their tournament schedule going to every tournament that they could and got a lot of competitive games outside of league play,” said DSS athletic director Andrew Robson. “When they got to the South Fraser’s they were playing their best volleyball of the year. They went won all of their games and didn’t drop a set in the tournament.”
Pacers named to the South Fraser Championships all-star team included Mason Dubnov and Kin Grewal while tournament MVP was Matt McKay.
The senior girls, coached by Grant Horby, finished third at the South Fraser’s and qualified for the provincials which will be co-hosted by Earl Marriot and Seaquam starting Nov. 28th.
Maddy Cortonesi was named to the South Fraser all-star team.
“This is a big year for the senior girls, and they have had a successful season up to now,” said Robson. “I would say they are peeking at the right time and for them, this is the first time they have been in the AAAA provincials. We are super excited that they qualified. This is a tremendous accomplishment for them.”
As for the senior boys, coached by Robson, they finished second at the South Fraser Championships and will head to Victoria for the provincials on Nov. 27.
Jack Thompson and Arshaan Bilga were the DSS all-stars at the South Fraser’s.
“It has been successful season for us. We were hoping that we would qualify for the provincials, so we accomplished that goal,” he said. “I’m proud of the fact that we got it done. We went in as the number one seed and lost to Elgin Park in the final. We have had a good rivalry with Elgin Park all season and have been in the top four with them all season. We are going into the provincials looking to improve on our bronze medal finish at provincials from last season.”
