The Junior Varsity South Delta Secondary Sun Devils closed out the exhibition portion of their football schedule with a big 27-8 win on the road over WJ Mouat, on Sept. 26.

The Sun Devils finished the pre-season with a 2-3 record.

South Delta scored TDs in each of the four quarters opening up a 27-0 lead before Mouat scored late in the fourth quarter.

Quinn Kirincic finished five for seven for 173 yards with three TD passes. He also ran in a TD from four-yards out.

Ty MacGregor, Akshaan Gill and Easton Giesbrecht all caught TDs, with MacGregor finishing the day as the top receiver with 83 yards.

“The boys played significantly better than they did last week and was really happy to get all the players in,” said head coach Scott Martens. “We left the game healthy which was nice to see as we did not dress seven players because of injury and illness.”

The Sun Devils open regular season play on Thursday (Oct. 3) as they host Lord Tweedsmuir at 3:15 p.m., at Dennison Park.

“We will need to step it up as Lord Tweedsmuir always plays us tough and we ended their season last year in the semifinals,” said Martens. “Our team is very young, but it is showing signs of starting to understand some of the concepts and responsibilities on both sides of the ball.”

Senior varsity

The senior Sun Devils picked up an entertaining 31-21 win over WJ Mouat in their regular season home-opener, last Saturday, Sept. 28.

Both teams came into the game with 4-0 pre-season records.

Dominic Dumas returned to the field only having missed two games with a broken wrist.

With his cast heavily padded on his non-throwing hand, he and his brother Damian helped led the Sun Devils to the win.

Luckily for Dominic, his brother shares the backfield with him and the province’s leading rusher showed why he is so dangerous, amassing more than 200 yards rushing.

The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead after a high snap sailed over the punter’s hands and through the back of the end zone for a safety.

South Delta then had a 35-yard connection from Dominic to Holden Hunter for a TD and a 9-0 lead.

Mouat struck back with a pair of touchdowns for a 14-9 lead at the half.

Early in the second half, it looked like Mouat was about to get another one, but the tough South Delta defence forced a fumble, and the next play, Damian took the handoff and sprinted for a 90-yard score. The two-point conversion put South Delta up 17-14.

The defence held strong, and the offence was able to put together a nice drive capped by another Damian TD, which made it 24-14.

Mouat didn’t flinch and quickly marched up the field, punching it in from the five-yard-line, to cut the lead to 24-21.

A short series on offence for the Sun Devils had Mouat getting the ball back deep in their end, and Anthony De Albuquerque secured his second interception of the day and took it to the house for an incredible touchdown to seal the win.

The Sun Devils travel to Vancouver College on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. tilt against the Fighting Irish in their second regular season game.
