Kurtis Reid will be proudly representing his province and hometown at the Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
Reid was named to Team B.C. following his outstanding performance at the Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games held back in July in Kamloops. That’s where he earned gold medals in the 100 metres, shot put and standing long jump events.
When Reid isn’t competing in athletics, he is making a difference in his community.
As a young adult with Down Syndrome, he is impressively juggling three jobs — working at Thrifty Foods, the Reach Child Development Society as a PlayGroup Assistant Society and as a newspaper carrier with the Delta Optimist.
Despite his busy schedule, Reid also finds the time to volunteer for Delta Parks and Recreation, as well as Sacred Heart Church.
His participation in Delta Special Olympics goes beyond track and field, as a valuable member of the swimming, soccer, baseball and floor hockey teams.
His leisure time includes, photography, the Ladner Pioneer Library - Next Chapter Book Club and the Ladner Community Garden.
On Monday night, Reid and other Delta Special Olympics athletes were recognized and congratulated by Mayor Lois Jackson during the regular council meeting. They also received a Certificate of Achievement from the Corporation of Delta.
