Russell Howlett has wasted little time in making a big impression to launch his university golf career.

The South Delta Secondary graduate and UBC freshman took individual honours in leading the Thunderbirds to victory at the Fraser Valley Cascades Invitational held at the Chilliwack Golf Club.

The Beach Grove Golf Club junior alumni opened the tournament with a 5-under 67 on Monday and held off Fraser Valley's Eli Greene by a single shot with a 69 on Tuesday for the first Canada West victory of his career.

UBC finished four strokes ahead of the host Cascades to earn the team title. Fellow UBC freshman John Paul Khalert fired a 3-under 69 Tuesday as the T-Birds carded a two-day total of 17-under par.

The team now heads to Idaho next week for the Lewis Clark Invitational, before the Canada West Championship Oct. 4 to 5.
