The Vancouver Mainland Football League 2021 season is underway and each week the hometown South Delta Rams will provide updates to the Optimist on their teams’ progress.
U8 Gold
Started the season off losing a close game to the Coquitlam Chargers. With a number of new players playing football for the first time, this was a great result. Declan Grant scored the lone touchdown with a long run, showing some excellent speed and footwork down the sideline. Jason Treflin and Ryan Goodall were a force on defence and stifled the Coquitlam offence for most of the game.
U8 Green
South Delta Green met the RCHFC Hyacks in New West for its season opener. There were plenty of brand new faces to football on both teams and the kids all had a blast.
Each team scored a pair of touchdowns and some great plays were made on both sides of the ball. A great way to kick of the start of the season.
Atom Green
The South Delta Rams Atom Green played geographical rival, North Delta Longhorns, at John Oliver field in their season opener.
With a well-disciplined, relentless effort on defence, the Rams were able hold off the Longhorns attack. Bolstered by several big runs behind some excellent blocking on offense the Rams were able to secure the 26-8 victory. Great way to start off the season.
Atom Gold
The Rams Atom Gold team lost their season opener 26-6 to the North Surrey T-Birds at Bear Creek Park. Despite the loss, coaches maintain that the score doesn’t reflect the effort their players put forth. Highlights include Evan Chatha’s 30-plus yard touchdown run and Brady Robertson’s quarterback sack.
Junior Bantam
The South Delta Rams Junior Bantam team lost their season opener against the New West Hyacks.
Only a few returning players amongst a bunch of new faces on the team.
The offense got rolling with hard-hitting runs by David Olson, being led through the defense by Alex Taylor.
Quinn Sjoberg started off the scoring by receiving a pass from Rylan Chima.
A tough and gritty performance up front for the defense led by defensive end Nick Bosco, while Jarred Brown made several tackles.
The Rams ended up with a loss, but will regroup for another games against the Hyacks in a Friday Night Lights game at Dennison Park. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
