Tsawwassen has a BCHL champion for 2024.
Charlie Derrheim played defence this season for the Surrey Eagles who won their fifth Fred Page Cup in franchise history in late May as they beat the Penticton Vees 3-1 in game six to win the title in the league championship series.
Derrheim played in 30 regular season game for the Eagles picking up three assists while he didn’t register a point in 17 playoff games.
The Eagles won the Coastal Conference beating Cowichan, Victoria and Port Alberni before advancing to play the Interior Conference champion Vees.
Derrheim was one of 17 B.C. born players on the Eagles’ roster, this season, giving the team a real hometown flavour.
As a rookie on the team this season, Derrheim said it was amazing to go all the way and win the championship.
“I didn’t believe it at first when we were pouring on to the ice after we won game six,” he said. “It doesn’t happen very often when you get a chance to win something like this, so it was very exciting for us and all my teammates.”
Derrheim said this year’s team had a real special bond.
“I think just the chemistry and how close we were. We are all best friends from the start of the year until the end,” he said. “We just had a real close locker room and that helped with our success.”
Playing well into June means a shorter off season, but Derrheim says he will take that.
“I’ll take some time off but keep hitting the gym and then get back on to the ice,” he said. “When you win once, we want to get back to this again next year.”
