Tunnel Town juniors advance to provincial showcase events

Rhys Gamache & Kayla Graham off to B.C. championships

Four juniors from the Tunnel Town Curling Club will be participating in upcoming provincial championships.

Rhys Gamache and Kayla Graham have qualified with their respective teams to compete at the B.C. Men's and Women's Junior Championships. Meanwhile, Katie Sim and Krista Jensen will be representing Zone 4 at the 2012 B.C. Winter Games.

All four of these young athletes have been active members of the Tunnel Town Curling Club. They have not only logged plenty of hours on the ice sharpening up their games but have all volunteered time by helping out with teaching and organizing events for younger curlers.

Gamache and Graham both qualified with their teams at the Coastal playdowns where four men and women's teams earned B.C. berths.

On the men's side Rhys' team won three straight games to become the event's "A" qualifier. On the women's side Graham's foursome fought hard to win its first game then lost the second game on the final rock of the last end which sent the girls to the "B" bracket. They were then involved in nearly a four hour marathon, prevailing in extra ends. A second loss sent them to the "C" where they claimed a qualifying position.

The provincial junior championships for both will take place from December 27-31 in Victoria.

Eight rinks will compete in a seven game round robin with the top three advancing to the playoff round.

The winner will represent B.C. at the Canadian Championships in Napanee, ON in February.

Sim and Jensen are competing with two sisters from North Delta - Sarah and Megan Daniels. The B.C. Winter Games will take place in Vernon Feb. 23-26.

The teams will play in a three game pool competition with the top two from each group advancing to playoffs. The winner will represent B.C. at the Optimist International U18 championships in Toronto in April.
