The East Delta greenhouse was to be one of the biggest cannabis grow facilities in the world.

A massive East Ladner greenhouse complex that’s made the switch to cannabis is reportedly being shut down, less than two years after taking over the facility.

The greenhouse, along with another greenhouse facility in Langley, is operated by Canopy Growth, which is calling its B.C. operation BC Tweed.

Global News reported a worker at the Delta facility said they were informed at a big meeting this week that they were all terminated.

Canopy Growth is the world’s largest cannabis producer, however, the lack of retail stores in some provinces including B.C. had been cited as a major problem for cannabis producers.

BC Tweed’s 1.7-million-square-foot facility on Hornby Drive was to be one of the biggest players in the Canadian recreational marijuana market.

Already the largest supplier of legal medical marijuana in Canada prior to the legalization of recreational pot, Ontario-based Canopy Growth is being taken to court in the U.S. by New-York based Pawar Law Group, which is applying for a class action lawsuit.

The law firm alleges Canopy “exaggerated and/or overestimated the potential market for its products in Canadian retail stores.”

Constellation Brands now owns a 37 per cent stake in Canopy Growth.
