Fortunately, Delta View has been spared from having a serious outbreak.
That's the word from the provincial health officer today.
The Delta View Care Centre, an East Delta long-term care facility, had one confirmed case of COVID-19, an employee who tested positive.
That confirmation came from Fraser Health on Saturday, March 21, but that turned out to be the only case connected with the 296-bed facility.
Dr. Bonnie Henry at her daily briefing Monday said the facility is now considered all clear.
Henry said Delta View has been taken off the list as they have had no new cases through two incubation periods.
"Many of our outbreaks were caught early enough and have a very small number of cases," said Henry. "But there are still some where we are actively monitoring because we wait a whole two incubation periods before we say it is over. I think all of the effort that has gone on in those homes has certainly stabilized the situation and people are getting the care they need."
The facility on Burns Drive consists of two care homes -- the 216-bed Delta View Life Enrichment Centre and the 80-bed Delta View Habilitation Centre.
Extensive health measures put in place at long-term care facilities at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic have helped stem the tide of outbreaks, said health officials from Fraser Health.
“When we started seeing cases arising in Vancouver Coastal, we already implemented measures to prevent these cases in the first place,” Dr. Martin Lavoie, Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer, said recently. “All of our long-term care facilities were putting in measures that would reduce the risk and if it was detected we could act very quickly.”
B.C. seniors advocate Isobel Mackenzie told the Optimist recently there’s understandably much concern about the impacts to long-term care.
Long-term care homes, especially in Ontario and Quebec, have been particularly hit hard by the virus with many infections and fatalities.
B.C., so far, has reported over 20 care home outbreaks.
