It’s that time again to do some preventative action to the outside of your house to help prevent rodents and other pests from wanting to get into your house this winter. You should not be surprised how much the outdoors can impact your life inside as landscaping techniques can ward off rodents and insects from coming inside.
By keeping trees and shrubs trimmed at least a 3 feet away from the house, this can prevent easy access for rats and trim back a total of 6 feet for squirrels. If you use mulch for landscaping toprevent loss of water by evaporation, promote soil productivity, and keep weeds down, all kinds of pests like to use the insulating properties of mulch as a temporary home, so turn it at least once a season to disrupt their activity.
Never put mulch next to the foundation, as well. If you are storing firewood, it’s important to check firewood properly before bringing it inside, all kinds of pests maybe lurking inside the wood. Also, stored firewood off the ground by a couple inches and keep it as dry as possible as carpenter ants will turn it into sawdust. If plants are brought indoors to protect them from frost, carefully inspect them for spiders and other insects.
